The Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Class and Other Backward Class Students was launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment’s Department of Social Justice, that aimed at providing good quality coaching to the students that belonged to underprivileged and disadvantaged backgrounds, including people from the Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class communities.

It provides an environment for student candidates to be able to appear in competitive examinations that help in applying for admission in reputed colleges and higher institutions or for securing employment in either public or private sector.

The government selects a total of over 3,500 students under the scheme every year. Of all slots, at least 70 percent slots are reserved for female candidates.

What is the Objective of Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class Students?

The scheme focuses on a wide variety of options for which coaching and training is provided. Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class Students trains students for Group A and Group B exams that are conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, the State Public Service Commissions, or the Staff Selection Commission, and the different posts offered by the Railway Recruitment Board.

The Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class Students also trains students for Officers’ Grade examinations that banks, insurance companies and Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) conduct.

It trains students for competitive exams like engineering — IIT-JEE, or medical examination — NEET, or management examination — CAT, or legal examination — CLAT.

The scheme also trains students for courses in the National Defence Academy and defence services. For students willing to apply for admission outside India, the Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class Students also trains students for examinations like SAT, GRE, GMAT, IELTS, and TOEFL.

What are the benefits of Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class
Students?

The students are paid a stipend of ₹4,000 per month during the duration of the course, which doesn’t exceed beyond 12 months. For the students that successfully clear the interview rounds of either central civil service examinations or state civil service examinations for classes 1 and 2 posts, students are paid ₹15,000 as an incentive.

What is the eligibility criteria for Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward
Class Students?

Among the many eligibility criteria, it is important for the candidate to be a student, and from the
Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class community.

Each student’s family annual income should either be ₹8,00,00 or less than that. For students
applying for competitive examinations, the applicant must be a student in class XII or should have
completed it, to avail benefits under the Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other
Backward Class Students.

For applicants applying for competitive examinations, where having an undergraduate degree is mandatory, one should be a final year student or should have completed the degree.

For each applicant, one can avail the benefits under the Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste
and Other Backward Class Students not more than twice, and that is irrespective of the number of
chances a candidate is entitled to for a particular competitive examination.

No candidate is allowed to avail benefits of any other scheme, when applying for Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other Backward Class Students.

What documents are required for the Free Coaching Scheme for Scheduled Caste and Other
Backward Class Students?

To apply, students should keep an eye on central universities that often release suitable advertisements that invite eligible students to apply online on the portal at coaching.dosje.gov.in that provides details to join.

To submit your application, students and applicants should be ready with a passport size photograph, caste certificate, Aadhar card, age proof, and residence proof, income certificate, ID card, bank account linked with Aadhar card, marksheets of classes X, XII.

The students are also expected to provide a declaration that they have not availed benefits of the scheme more than twice, and another declaration that the student has not availed benefits under any other central or state government scheme.
