Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana Scheme — What Is It, Role and Objectives, How To Apply?

As farmers are considered the backbone of the Indian agrarian economy, for their upliftment and
support, the government launched Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana in 2019 with the
motive to provide minimum yearly income support of up to ₹6,000 to all farmers, including small
and marginal land holding farmer families, that include a husband, a wife, and minor children. The
government led initiative can be paid in three equal instalments at ₹2,000 every four months.

The Objective of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana:

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman
Nidhi is a central sector scheme which is completely funded by the Indian government. While being a
national scheme, the state governments and Union Territories will identify these farmer families
eligible for the initiative and support based on the scheme’s guidelines.

The fund will directly be transferred to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode. The government had announced a funding of ₹75,000 crores.

India being an agrarian economy, with contribution of over 20.2% to the country’s Gross Domestic
Product, with over 50% of the labour force deployed in agri-sector, as per the Indian Economic
Survey 2020-2021.

For farmers in India, with economic development and rapid urbanisation coming in, agricultural land has become fragmented, forcing local farmers to adapt to urban needs and markets, amidst labour shortages. Amidst land being acquired by government and private entities, a sense of security for farmers addresses the socio-economic concerns. The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme was launched to benefit 125 million farmers with income support.

What Is The Eligibility Criteria for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana Scheme?

While the identification of farmers has been given to state governments and UTs, which will be
responsible to identify which farmer family will benefit from Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi
Yojana scheme.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme was launched for farmers from across rural and urbanised setups, those including small and marginal farmers, farmer families with cultivable land, who are all Indian citizens.

Who is excluded from Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?

However, the Indian government has also notified many groups that are not eligible for Pradhan
Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana scheme, including an institutional landholder, farmer families
with a member with a constitutional post, a government official, a central or state Public Sector
Undertaking (PSU) employee, present and former Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members, or State
Legislative Assembly and State Legislative Councils, district panchayat, or a municipal corporation.
Even those, who have filed Income Tax for the previous assessment year, or families that receive
pension of over ₹10,000 or more per month, and families with working professionals that are
doctors, engineers, CAs, lawyers, and architects.

How To Apply for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana?

To register for Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, farmers’ families should be aware that
each state government or UT supposedly nominates a PMKSNY nodal officer. The farmer families can
approach them or revenue officers to register for this scheme.

The farmer families can also register to avail the scheme through Common Service Centres (CSCs) by
paying a fee.

Farmer families can also apply online for the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana through
the portal, by clicking “New Farmer Registration” under the Farmer’s Corner section.

For farmer families that are self-registering and enrolling through a common service centre by paying a fee. While registering for the scheme as a beneficiary, it is important to note the documentation
required, it includes your Aadhaar Card, proof of citizenship, documents that substantiate ownership
of land, and the details of bank account. When registering online, scanned copies of all documents
are to be provided.

After the application for becoming a beneficiary, farmer families can also check the status online.

Farmer’s Corner. Then enter your Aadhar Card number, your registered mobile phone number or
account number.
